"The key idea of this book is to argue that a 'third generation' of reception studies and audience ethnography is presently taking shape and will establish itself in the near future. However, the division of the development of reception studies and audience research into three 'generations' outlined... in this introductory chapter must not be taken matter-of-factly. Rather, the outline of the suggested division should be seen as a way of pointing out an emergent trend, a direction audience research could take. There are elements in the present research that already lead the way to the new agenda that future research should, in my view, address, but a solid body of research tackling the new field of research is yet to be done. "An analysis of publishing in African languages in four countries of francophone Africa (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Senegal), where the Deutsche Stiftung für Internationale Entwicklung (German Foundation for International Development, now part of GIZ), in cooperation with other agencies, has be...en developing training programmes for textbook authors to create local capacity in the writing of textbooks for local language teaching. It reports about the main lessons learnt during the execution of the programme. Ingrid Jung argues that the development of societies depends crucially on the access to and the written processing of information, and discusses what this means for local language publishing. She concludes that the present situation in Africa is characterized by a broad gap between what is necessary to contribute to social change and education, and what local book industries offer in the field of local language publications for educational and other purposes. “To satisfy the demand for books and learning materials in African languages in the long run, it is necessary to contribute to the development of national and regional publishing houses and to the capacity building of all links of the book chain." War in the twentieth century is a vivid and traumatic phenomenon which has left behind it survivors who engage time and time again in acts of remembrance. Thus this volume, which contains essays by outstanding scholars of twentieth-century history, focuses on the issues raised by the shadow of war in this century. Drawing on material from countries in Europe, and from Israel and the United States, the contributors have adopted a 'social agency' approach which highlights the behaviour, not of whole societies or of ruling groups alone, but of the individuals who do the work of remembrance, who feel they have a duty to remember, and who want to preserve a piece of the past. More specifically, the traumatic collective memory resulting from the horors of the First World War, the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, and the Algerian War is examined through studies of public forms of remembrance, such as museums and exhibitions, literature and film, thus demonstrating that a popular kind of collective memory is still very much alive." "This article explores how women's community radio can contribute to a feminist public sphere and serve as a tool for women's empowerment through the media. Compared to film, TV and newspapers, radio is a relatively under researched and under valued area of the media. An extension of this situation ...is the paucity of theoretical and empirical studies regarding women and radio. The purpose of this article is to contribute to a theory of women's radio and its relation to practice. Employing feminist readings of Habermas' theory of the public sphere, it is possible to develop a concept of a women's or feminist public sphere in relation to women's community radio. This article discusses whether and how this is emerging through the opportunities that women have in terms of access, training and development in community radio. With empirical data from women's radio stations and projects in different parts of Europe, radio as a potential feminist public sphere is explored, and a foundation laid for a further grounding of an understanding of how alternative media can be a tool for women's empowerment."
