"Cultural heritage organizations face at least three main challenges. First, the volume of digital archives makes it extremely difficult for archivists to assess records. Applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to archives is still at an experimental stage, but AI/ ML could b

ecome an integral part of archival processes. To manage the sheer bulk and potential sensitivity of records, archivists will also rely on creators to help them make appraisal and selection decisions at the point of deposit. Second, most born-digital collections are currently closed due to a wide range of reasons (including technical issues, copyright, and data protection). Regardless of whether archives are digital or not, archivists need to balance individual rights and the public interest in the context of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe. Nobody would reasonably claim that all born-digital data should be unlocked and openly accessible. Yet, it is important to recognize that “dark” archives contain vast amounts of data essential to scholars – including email correspondence, drafts of manuscripts, digital photos and videos. Within current legal frameworks, making born-digital archives more accessible is an urgent priority to fully make sense of our cultural heritage. Third, data science and AI are becoming essential tools, but very few scholars (particularly in the humanities) have been trained to master these research methods, a skills gap which in turn has an impact on the training we offer to students." "This study explores the challenges of archiving the Egyptian revolution from 2011, and basically any archive consisting of digital media, specifically in contexts of ongoing political contestation. The text proposes a media-archaeological approach in both theory and practice: The media artist Kaya

rt of this reader contains the self-portrayals of the archives involved in the network and presentations of their contemporary witness projects, while the second part features reports from the historians on their practice, including reflections on their approaches. The appendix contains detailed overviews of the archived interviews of contemporary witnesses. Together with the texts, they are intended to give an impression of the interesting interviews that can already be found in the Ecology Archives and to arouse curiosity about their scientific use."

"The ARSC Guide to Audio Preservation is a practical introduction to caring for and preserving audio collections. It is aimed at individuals and institutions that have recorded sound collections but lack the expertise in one or more areas to preserve them. Our audio legacy is at serious risk because

of media deterioration, technological obsolescence, and, often, lack of accessibility. This legacy is remarkable in its diversity, ranging from wax cylinders of extinct Native American languages to tapes of local radio broadcasts, naturalists’ and ethnographers’ field recordings, small independent record company releases, and much more." ntified, catalogued and digiti sed through the Programme, bringing together articles on 19 of the 244 projects supported since its inception. These contributions demonstrate the range of materials documented — including rock inscriptions, manuscripts, archival records, newspapers, photographs and sound archives — and the wide geographical scope of the Programme. Many of the documents are published here for the first time, illustrating the potential these collections have to further our understanding of history." (Back cover)

teau for free and easy download - without payment, subscription or password. While Digital Himalaya began as a strategy for collecting and protecting the products of colonial-era ethnographic collections on the Himalayas - for posterity and for access by source communities - the project has now become a collaborative digital publishing environment, bringing a new collection online every month, with close to half a million web visitors since its establishment in 2000. Almost all of our digitization and scanning is now conducted in Nepal, dramatically reducing operating costs and increasing productivity. Our funding no longer comes from research councils in the United Kingdom and the United States, but through web referrals and from individual or institutional donations around the world. The project is now supported by people and organizations that recognize the work and want to contribute to it. In short, what began as an academic research project a decade ago is now a vast online portal for hosting and disseminating knowledge about the HiMalayas to a demanding, fast-growing and truly global user base." Malaysia. The purpose of this study is twofold: firstly, to present an introduction to digital archive management for media organizations and content creators, helping to build awareness and greater understanding of the topic as a whole; secondly, to provide guidance and practical advice, in particular for small- to medium-sized media organizations, as well as for those operating with limited resources, or under challenging environmental and political circumstances. The findings of this study can be broadly divided into two areas. The first relates to the safe storage of content and the associated challenges faced by organizations attempting to store large amounts of data. The second is the effective cataloguing and management of digital archives, allowing content within an organization to be described, discovered and re-used." (Executive summary)
