(Seite 5)

"This knowledge brief showcases RNW Media's experience with online community moderation. It explains what community moderation means, why we believe it is an essential component of our Citizens' Voice programme, and the strategies we have developed together with our moderators to guide them in the w

ork they do and the decisions they need to make. Also, we present results from research that we conducted on three of our communities to test the effectiveness of our approach. Lastly, our moderators working in Burundi, DRC and Mali share their experience and insights, showing how moderation goes in practice. They talk about the secret of being a good moderator and share the challenges they experience in their daily work. Citizens' Voice is active in Burundi, China, DRC, Egypt, Libya, Mali and Yemen and focuses on social cohesion and inclusive governance. Applying a user-centred approach and persuasive storytelling, Citizens' Voice creates and maintains digital platforms offering safe spaces where young women and men from across political, ethnic, racial, regional or religious divides can come together in a way which is often impossible in the offline space. In-country teams create multi-media content relevant to the local context to attract and engage young people via a variety of digital channels. Through moderated discussions, they encourage disparate groups to voice their opinions on issues of common interest both online and offline. To achieve impact, Citizens' Voice aims to engage the broadest possible spectrum of stakeholders at all levels." (Introduction)

"The news organisations that we spoke to could be broadly divided into two camps with regards to their attitudes to online comments: there are those who embrace comments from users, often as part of a wider strategy of involving their readers in their publication, and there are those who see them as

essentially, a necessary evil. Very few organisations (seven) didn‘t allow comments at all, but in times of financial difficulties, a costly initiative such as comment moderation, without any immediate and obvious financial benefit, is not always a priority. However, there are many organisations which see them as an essential element in fostering a real community around their publication or a niche topic. Comments are believed to increase reader engagement, both in terms of time spent on site, and in terms of loyalty." (Page 6)

"Tools for Development" aims to help you deliver successful development activities and interventions by giving you access to the skills and techniques you will need to do so. The demand for it has come from DFID staff both in the UK and overseas who recognise that development initiatives inside and

outside DFID need to be designed and managed using people-driven and performancebased management methods. Over the past decade, DFID has worked with others to develop new methodologies and refine earlier ones to support such approaches; the range of techniques from which to choose is still expanding." "While there are many trainers offering curricula in radio, this curriculum focuses on the management aspect of community radio. Many people in organisations focus their commitment and energy on the delivery side of the organisation and neglect the task of building the organisation and its people. W

hen things go horribly wrong, as they so often do, there is much talk of lack of dedication and commitment. People get disillusioned and drop out. The failure in non-profit organisations often has nothing to do with a lack of commitment, and everything to do with a failure of management. Organisations need to be managed properly so that they grow and succeed. Radio station managers need to understand how organisations work, and how they develop and change. They need to manage the people and the resources, as well as the programming, to build a successful radio station. This training curriculum is aimed at building radio station managers' understanding of organisations and of the management role. While there is management training available, it tends to be aimed at commercial stations. Community radio, with its emphasis on community participation and volunteer involvement, has its own management issues. This curriculum was developed specifically for community radio stations - drawing on the experience of community radio stations in South Africa." (Introductory comments, page 1)

editors assert that participation must be dialogic and transactional, and that development communicators have a role in facilitating the spread of new philosophies, concepts, and models, which facilitate participation at all stages of the development process. This volume is divided into sections on theories, methodologies, 'participatory decision-making and action' and 'participatory message making', and includes case studies."
